A day laborer was killed when a trench collapsed at a construction site in New York. The worker, Juan Amendano, 30, was a married father of two. The eight foot trench collapsed at the site of work on an elementary school. The construction company owner, Mohammad Saigad, was cited for failure to provide protection on the sides of excavation and working without a permit. Ultimately, OSHA will investigate. An off-duty fighfighter, David Offitto, tried his best to save Amendano but was unsuccessful. The battalion chief said such trench collapses were very common throughout the United States. Employers must take steps to stop these needless deaths.
