The number of needless deaths that occur at construction sites continues to rise. The latest figures from the Lansing State Journal showed that in 2005 there were 110 deaths compared to 146 deaths in 2006. According to construction site attorney Michael A. Ferrara, Jr., there is absolutely no excuse for this contining carnage. Companies must take all steps possible to avoid these tragedies.
The journal’s report, a joint project of Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and Department of Labor and Economic Development, is critical of companies that are lax on job safety issues. Companies make a decision to be safe or not to be safe, says the journal. For more of workplace safety see the NIOSH website.
