Arm & Hammer Spinbrush – A Dangerous Clean

If you heard that a particular brand of toothbrush was breaking apart in people’s mouths, chipping their teeth, injuring their faces and presenting a choking hazard, you probably wouldn’t use it, right? And you certainly wouldn't let your children use it, right? Well then read on. The FDA has stated that the Arm & Hammer Spinbrush (called the Crest Spinbrush until 2009), including the version made specifically for children, has been doing just that.

Injuries reported from using the Spinbrush powered toothbrush include

· chipped or broken teeth

· cuts to the mouth and gums

· swallowing and choking on broken pieces

· injury to the face and eyes

FDA is alerting the public about the potential for injury while using the following models of Spinbrush:

· Spinbrush ProClean

· Spinbrush ProClean Recharge

· Spinbrush Pro Whitening

· Spinbrush SONIC

· Spinbrush SONIC Recharge

· Spinbrush Swirl

· Spinbrush Classic Clean

· Spinbrush For Kids

· Spinbrush Replacement Heads –FDA.gov

To make matters somewhat worse, in 2011 the FDA found that the manufacturer of the Arm & Hammer Spinbrush, Church & Dwight Co., Inc., failed to report to the FDA numerous consumer complaints about the electric toothbrush breaking apart and causing choking and injuries to people’s teeth, gums and faces. After the FDA issued a warning to Church & Dwight for failing to report the complaints, the company started including safety warnings in their ads and labeling.

These warnings and statements from the FDA don’t seem like enough to prevent this dangerous product from continuing to injure people. If the Arm & Hammer Spinbrush is capable of doing this kind of harm, it should be recalled or taken off the market altogether.
