Authorities in Rhode Island have suspended the operating priviledges of Dr. Frederick Harrington for operating on the wrong side of a patient’s brain. The mistake is most likely the cause of the patient’s ultimate death. This is the third time in six years that a surgeon operated on the wrong side. Despite all the attention to wrong-side surgery, it is remarkable that these errors are still occurring. The hospital admits it didn’t follow proper procedures and the authorties have ordered the hospital to hire a consultant to review its surgical safety procedures. This confirms what trial attorneys have been saying for years, namely, that there really are meritorious, non-frivolous lawsuits that need to be brought to hold wrongdoers personally responsible for their actions.
