Congress enacted the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. It requres a summary of the written report shall be sent directly to the patient in terms easily understood by a lay person. This must be done within 30 days. Phone call or verbal communication alone is not sufficient. In cases where there is a suspicious abnormality or suggestive of malignancy, then that finding must also be conveyed to the referring physician immediately.
