“Organic” Won’t Keep E. Coli Out of Beef

Comments Off

New Jersey is one of six states that received shipments of organic beef that could possibly contain E. coli, the dangerous food-borne bacteria which can cause diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and even kidney failure.

First Class Foods Inc. of California says that company sampling found the E. coli in ground beef that was produced on December 7 and December 16, and shipped to retailers in California, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Washington and Wisconsin.

No one has reported getting sick from this beef as of yet; hopefully the recall will prevent this. But it goes to show that even buying organic meat can’t save you from food-borne illness that’s often associated with dirty production conditions. This is partly because meat is labeled “organic” based on how the animals are raised when they are alive (they must eat only organic feed and never receive antibiotics or growth hormones), not how the meat is processed afterward.
