Your Dead Pet Is Worth No More Than A Dead TV – Vets and Pet Food Industry Oppose New Law

Comments Off

If you are one of the thousands who have had a pet die as a result of eating bad pet food, you will be surprised to learn that not only is the Pet Food Institute blocking new legislation, but also the vets themselves. Right now, if your dog died from eating Menu or Iams dog food, you are not entited to compensation for your non-economic damages for the grief you went through. For many, their pets are really family members and their loss is very real. Assemblyman Neil Cohen (D-NJ) introduced a bill (AB 4217) to allow pet owners to recover for their non-economic loss that would be capped at $15,000. Right now, if your dog died it’s just like if your TV died. You get the replacement value of the dog and that’s it. The new bill should have sailed though without opposition, but understandably the pet food industry came out against it. But shockingly, so did the vets themselves and their organizations, the AVMA and New Jersey VMA. Imagine, these caring vets really don’t care about the pet owners real losses. They only care about themselves. They should be ashamed of the position they have taken on this bill and reverse it. Pet owners: call your vet today and see what the Animal Legal Defense Fund is doing to protect your rights.
